Are You Ready to Change?

As humans, we should constantly strive to evolve by making improvements in our lives. Personally, I could stand to make changes to improve my diet, my finances, and my personal relationships. But there is a difference between knowing you need to make a change and being ready to make a change. So how do you know when you are ready to make a change?

When assessing your readiness to change ask yourself these three questions:

  1. Why do you want to change?

You need to have a clear understanding of your reason to change. This is your motivation and it should be very meaningful and relevant to you. Have a big enough reason to change.

2. Can things stay the way they are now?

Create a list and consider the benefits of making this change as well as the consequences of leaving things the way they are. Make a distinction between to life you want and the life you don’t want.

3. What is preventing you from changing?

Assess your environment for obstacles that might get in the way of you making the change. There might be some relationships you need to create or dissolve before you can make the change. Anticipate obstacles that could interfere with your efforts to change and plan ways to get past them.

Change is inevitable but it is not automatic. Change is a process and some stages of change take longer to move through than others. When attempting to make changes, we might need to try several times before we are successful. Being successful at change takes persistence, discipline, and a positive perspective. It is important to view past attempts at change as learning opportunities and not failures. Change can be difficult but it not impossible. Keep trying and you will be rewarded.
